Hargeisa (SD) – The European Union’s ambassador to Somalia Nicolas Berlanga spoke to the reasons the EU is in support of Somaliland’s elections.

The Ambassador, who is currently in Hargeisa, was asked the question while at a meeting with Somaliland civil society groups yesterday.

“Men and women keep asking why the European Union is talking so much about Somaliland elections and spend so much energy encouraging elections to happen, and I will answer this question with a simple answer to you. “said the ambassador.

Ambassador Nicolas Berlanga continued: “The reason we speak about Somaliland elections is we want Somaliland to be a good example for all of us.”.

The fact that this is a question everyone is asking at this moment in time, perhaps speaks to how much people have given up on elections.

The European Union recently succeeded in ending a long-standing election commission dispute with Somaliland’s political parties.

Its not yet clear whether the Somaliland president will follow through with his promise to hold the multiple overdue elections in 2020.
