EU ambassador’s visit to Hargeisa fails to move the needle on election possibilities

Hargeisa (SD) – EU Ambassador to Somalia Nicolas Berlanga who mediated an election agreement between President Bihi and the opposition parties, visited Hargeisa last week.

Although the Ambassador’s trip to Hargeisa have been in good spirits, it is still unclear what action Nicolas Berlanga has taken to implement the terms of the agreement.

The EU Ambassador has not yet submitted the three members of the international community to the technical committee that will work with the electoral commission and members of the previous election committee.

The two opposition parties are the only signatories of the agreement that have so far made a point to nominate their two members on the new electoral commission.

In fact, President Bihi has rejected the UCID party nominee Hassan Yusuf Duale, due to his earlier resignation.

The Somaliland election agreement brokered by the EU Ambassador stipulates that the national parties and the president take steps ensuring parliamentary and local elections take place within 2020.

Its not clear whether the EU ambassador left Hargeisa this week enthused about the election prospects or left disappointed due to lack of the parties inability to implement the agreement.
