Somaliland and Puntland both claim the Darwish history

Hargeisa (SD)-Puntland and Somaliland are at odds with the commemoration of the Darwish history of  Sayid Mohamed Abdulla Hassan.

The two administrations each claim the Darwish history of the struggle as their, and therefore should solely hold the celebrations.

The Somali led struggle against the European colonists spear headed by Sayid Mohamed Abdulla’s Darwish fighters is revered by all Somalis and historians everywhere.

The controversy over the history of the struggle started when Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Saleban Ali Kore, from Sool region, a Darwish strong hold, stated the Darwish struggle took place in Somaliland.

However, the Puntland administration has opposed the move, and the administration held the Darwish anniversary commemoration for the first time, which was held in Garowe last night.

Puntland Vice President Ahmed Karash said Somaliland has no place in Darwish history and its claims is baseless.

Somaliland and Puntland have never celebrated the Darwish struggle before, and it is worth mentioning that each year the struggle was celebrated by people who currently reside the made famous by the Darwish, like Taleh.

The renewed interests in the Darwish struggle by Somaliland and Puntland seems political in Nature, as there are no known efforts by both in adducting the young generations about the history of the Darwish.
