Somcable’s removed after it fell out favor with Djibouti

Hargeisa (SD) – Members of Somaliland’s House of Representatives debated one the country’s most controversial telecommunications law today.

The parliamentarians after a long debate, tabled a motion signed on by 75 MPs to amend the telecommunications law that gave Somcable a monopoly on the Internet Cable.

68 MPs voted in favor of the amendment, while only one MP rejected it and the Chairman did not vote.

The amendment will make it easier for other companies interested in bringing the internet cable to the country.

Telesom and Somtel Companies have welcomed the action taken by the Somaliland parliament to quash the quota.

Djibouti is said to have pressured President Bihi to remove the quota for Somcable, a company it packed to get the deal in the first place.
