MOGADISHU (SD) – SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service is now officially available in Somalia, marking a significant advancement in the country’s connectivity. The service will provide high-speed internet access nationwide, including remote areas previously without reliable connections.
The Starlink Standard Kit costs $390 for equipment plus a $70 monthly fee, offering speeds of 100-270 Mbps for downloads and 10-25 Mbps for uploads. A portable “Starlink Mini” version is also available for $200 with the same monthly charge.
Somalia’s Ministry of Communications has approved the service. Officials are working on regulations to ensure secure and legal usage.
This development is expected to transform education, healthcare, and business sectors by improving internet access. However, challenges persist in terms of affordability and infrastructure, hindering widespread adoption.
Starlink’s satellite technology bypasses traditional ground infrastructure, making it ideal for Somalia’s underdeveloped telecom networks. The service could help bridge the digital divide, but it faces hurdles in implementation and accessibility.
