Somaliland President Leads National Talks to Resolve Awdal and Selel Conflict.

HARGEISA (SD) – The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro), alongside the Vice President, convened a high-level National Consultation Meeting aimed at finding a lasting solution to the ongoing conflict in the Awdal and Selel regions.

The meeting brought together key national figures, including leaders of the Guurti and House of Representatives, cabinet members, and the National Peace Committee. It opened with condolences to families affected by recent violence, as discussions focused on addressing the root causes of the conflict and preventing further escalation.

President Irro emphasized the importance of prioritizing peace, dialogue, and conflict resolution in line with Somaliland’s legal framework and traditions of mediation. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding civilian lives and maintaining national stability.

Participants agreed on the need for a unified national response, adopting measures to strengthen peace efforts, deliver humanitarian support, and restore coexistence among affected communities. Officials from both legislative councils and the cabinet expressed full support for the President’s peace initiative.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all parties to promote unity, social cohesion, and a swift, peaceful resolution, with stakeholders pledging to play active roles in ending the conflict in Awdal and Selel.

This initiative reflects an effort by Somaliland’s leadership to manage internal conflict through inclusive dialogue and traditional governance structures. By involving elders, parliament, and the executive, the government is reinforcing a collective approach to conflict resolution. While the success of these efforts will depend on implementation, the emphasis on unity and mediation aligns with Somaliland’s established model of maintaining internal stability.
