Uganda’s Army Commander Issues Financial Demands to Turkey or Threatens Troop Withdrawal from Somalia.

KAMPALA (SD) – The Commander of Uganda’s armed forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked controversy after issuing strong remarks about foreign involvement in Somalia and suggesting possible troop withdrawal.

Muhoozi, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, claimed that Ugandan forces played a central role in stabilizing Mogadishu between 2007 and 2011, stating that support at the time came mainly from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

He criticized Turkey’s involvement in Somalia, arguing that Ankara was not present during the earlier years of intense fighting but became active later. His remarks included controversial language that could strain diplomatic relations.

The statement comes as Turkey has become a major partner of Somalia in recent years, contributing to military training, infrastructure development, and economic support. Muhoozi’s comments are likely to draw attention, given Turkey’s growing influence in the country.

There has been no official response yet from Ankara, but the remarks are expected to trigger debate over the roles played by different international actors in Somalia’s stabilization.

Muhoozi’s statements reflect emerging tensions over influence and recognition among foreign actors involved in Somalia. While Uganda has historically been a key troop contributor, Turkey’s expanding role has shifted dynamics on the ground. Such rhetoric could complicate cooperation within international missions and raise questions about future military coordination in Somalia.
