TEL AVIV (SD)– Israel has appointed its first ambassador to Somaliland, marking a significant step in expanding diplomatic relations with the Horn of Africa region, according to official statements.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar named Michael Lotem, a seasoned diplomat and current non-resident economic envoy to Africa, as Israel’s first ambassador to Somaliland. He is expected to initially serve in a non-resident capacity.
The appointment follows Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December 2025, making it the first UN member state to formally recognize the self-declared republic. It also comes after Somaliland appointed its own ambassador to Israel earlier this year, signalling a rapid expansion of bilateral ties.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen political, economic, and strategic cooperation with Somaliland, while also deepening Israel’s diplomatic presence across Africa.
However, the Federal Government of Somalia has strongly condemned the decision, calling it a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and urging Israel to reverse the move.
Israel’s appointment of an ambassador formalizes its recognition of Somaliland and elevates relations to a new diplomatic level. This strengthens Somaliland’s international standing. The move reflects broader geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa, where strategic positioning and alliances are increasingly shaping foreign policy decisions.
