Puntland Rejects Extension of Federal Institutions’ Term, Calls for Urgent Dialogue

GAROWE (SD) – The Puntland government has formally opposed the extension of Somalia’s federal institutions, warning of potential constitutional and political instability if the dispute is not resolved.

In a statement issued after a cabinet meeting in Garowe, Puntland authorities said they reject any actions that fall outside the federal constitution, emphasizing the need to uphold the country’s legal framework and governance system.

The administration strongly criticized the Federal Parliament’s recent decision to extend the term of federal institutions, as well as the extension of the presidency of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud until May 15, 2026, describing both moves as unconstitutional.

Puntland warned that the situation has created legal uncertainty that could escalate into broader political and security instability, potentially threatening national unity if not addressed promptly.

The regional government called on the federal leadership to convene an urgent meeting with all stakeholders, including federal member states, stressing that dialogue and consensus remain the only viable path to resolving the crisis.

Puntland’s position reflects growing tensions between federal and regional authorities over constitutional authority and political legitimacy. By rejecting the term extension, Puntland is challenging the central government’s decisions and reinforcing its stance on federalism. If consensus is not reached, the dispute risks deepening divisions and destabilizing Somalia’s already fragile political environment.
