ANKARA (SD) – Turkey has announced the deployment of special forces to Somalia to secure an offshore oil exploration mission, according to a statement from the Turkish Ministry of Defence.
The deployment is aimed at protecting the drilling vessel Çağrı Bey, which is currently conducting oil exploration operations in Somali waters. Turkish officials said the move is part of strengthened security cooperation with Somalia, focusing on safeguarding natural resources and personnel involved in energy projects.
Ankara emphasized that ensuring the safety of exploration activities is essential for Somalia’s economic development and its efforts to utilize potential oil reserves. The Çağrı Bey vessel is considered a key component in identifying commercially viable oil deposits.
Turkey also reaffirmed its broader commitment to Somalia, highlighting ongoing support in military training, security assistance, and development initiatives, underscoring its role as a major strategic partner.
The deployment signals a deepening Turkey–Somalia partnership, particularly in the strategic energy sector. While it enhances security for critical infrastructure, it may also raise concerns about foreign military presence and influence. If successful, oil exploration could significantly boost Somalia’s economy, but it also increases geopolitical interest and competition around the country’s natural resources.
