Iran and Houthis Threatened by US-Somaliland Alliance Over Red Sea Control, Fox News Reports

NY (SD) – A report by Fox News has highlighted the increasing strategic significance of Somaliland amid rising tensions in the Red Sea and growing competition among regional and international powers.

According to the report, Western security planners are paying closer attention to Somaliland’s geographic position near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

The report states that concerns have emerged in Iran that the United States and its allies may increase their use of strategic facilities in Somaliland, particularly the Port of Berbera and Berbera Airport, to support regional security operations.

Berbera’s location places it close to key international shipping lanes used by commercial and energy vessels travelling through the Bab el-Mandeb corridor. Security analysts cited in the report suggested that Somaliland could play an increasingly important role in monitoring maritime threats and tracking activities linked to the Houthis operating in Yemen.

Some analysts argued that such developments may be viewed with concern in Tehran due to Iran’s longstanding relationship with the Houthis.

Speaking to media outlets, Somaliland Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Aden said Somaliland remains open to security cooperation with the United States and other international partners interested in maintaining stability in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region.

He emphasized Somaliland’s commitment to protecting maritime security, coastal areas, and international trade routes that pass through nearby waters.

The report also noted that officials from the United States Africa Command have visited Somaliland in recent months as part of ongoing discussions related to regional security and cooperation.

While the United States continues to officially support Somalia’s territorial integrity, the report observed that Somaliland is increasingly appearing in discussions concerning Red Sea security, maritime trade protection, and strategic competition in the Horn of Africa.

The Fox News report reflects a growing international perception that Somaliland’s strategic value extends beyond the question of political recognition and increasingly centers on regional security and maritime trade.

The importance of Berbera has grown significantly due to instability in the Red Sea, attacks on shipping by the Houthis, and rising competition among global and regional powers seeking influence along critical maritime routes. As a result, Somaliland is attracting greater attention from governments concerned about freedom of navigation and regional security.

For Somaliland, increased security cooperation with Western partners could strengthen its international profile and reinforce its argument that it is a stable and reliable security partner in the Horn of Africa.

However, the report’s suggestion that Iran is concerned about Somaliland’s growing role should be viewed within the broader context of regional geopolitical competition. Much of the discussion remains focused on potential future strategic arrangements rather than publicly announced military agreements.

The broader trend is that Somaliland is increasingly being viewed through a geopolitical lens, with its location near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait making it an important factor in discussions about Red Sea security, counterterrorism, and international trade protection.
