GAROWE (SD)– Puntland authorities say they have concluded a planned security operation in Galkayo, resulting in the arrest of more than 100 people and the seizure of weapons and military equipment.

In a statement, the Puntland Defense Forces said the operation targeted armed groups accused of threatening security and public order. These armed group better known as PSF were reportedly funded by the U.S. and were aligned with the Federal Government.

According to the statement, several individuals described as militia leaders were arrested, including Giijaale Abdi Baidoa, Baariyoow, Mahad Mowliid, and another official reportedly responsible for managing the Somali Police database.

Puntland said security forces detained 101 suspects and 60 injured individuals during the operation. Authorities added that relatives would be allowed to collect injured detainees who are not accused of serious offenses, in accordance with legal and judicial procedures.

The administration also reported seizing firearms, ammunition, military vehicles, police uniforms, handcuffs, boots, and other equipment. Puntland claimed that some of the recovered police equipment originated from a Chinese government donation intended for the Somali Police Force.

The Puntland Defense Forces urged all remaining armed groups operating in Puntland to surrender to the authorities, warning that those who refuse would face further security operations and legal action.

The operation marks a significant escalation in Puntland’s campaign to dismantle armed groups that it says operate outside its chain of command. By highlighting the arrest of alleged militia leaders and the recovery of police equipment reportedly supplied to Somalia’s federal security forces, Puntland appears to be reinforcing its claim that unauthorized armed networks are operating within its territory.

The reported seizure of equipment allegedly donated to the Somali Police Force is also likely to deepen existing tensions between Puntland and the Federal Government, particularly amid ongoing disputes over command of security forces and federal involvement in Puntland. While the operation demonstrates Puntland’s determination to assert its security authority, its broader political implications will depend on whether Mogadishu challenges Puntland’s account or seeks to de-escalate the growing confrontation.
