Fourth Round of Opposition Talks Concludes Without Breakthrough in Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – The fourth round of mediated talks between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposition leaders concluded Wednesday without resolution to the ongoing constitutional crisis, raising fears of renewed political tensions.

The meeting at Villa Somalia, mediated by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, concluded with an agreement to continue discussions. Still, no concrete progress was made on the disputed constitutional amendments.

Opposition leaders maintain their demand for a complete reversal of recent constitutional changes, particularly those affecting presidential elections and prime ministerial powers.

President Mohamud has reportedly offered to reconsider some amendments but refuses full reversal, requesting more time for consultations.

The standoff centers on controversial changes to Chapter 4 of Somalia’s provisional constitution.

Opposition groups enjoy support from regional states, including Puntland and Jubaland.

The dispute comes as Somalia prepares for its first direct elections in decades.

Both sides agreed to reconvene next week, though opposition leaders warned they may withdraw from talks if no progress is made. Observers fear prolonged instability could disrupt Somalia’s electoral timeline and ongoing security operations against al-Shabab militants.

The international community, including the UN and African Union, has called for dialogue to resolve the constitutional crisis peacefully.
