Hassan Sheikh survives mortar attack at Baidoa Airport.

BAIDOA (SD) – Somalia’s outgoing President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, survived a mortar attack carried out by Al-Shabaab at Shati Gaduud Airport in Baidoa on Friday afternoon, shortly after he arrived from Mogadishu.

The President had travelled to Baidoa to begin consultations on forming a new administration for South West State following the removal of Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen after recent clashes involving federal forces and allied militias.

According to journalists and airport staff, several mortars were fired at the airport as the President’s plane landed. One reportedly struck near the rear of the aircraft, prompting the pilots to move to a reinforced control area, while others landed near the runway and in a public waiting area.

Despite the attack, no casualties have been reported. The incident caused alarm among civilians and officials present at the airport during the President’s arrival.

The attack underscores ongoing security challenges in the region, particularly as political tensions remain high following recent developments in South West State.

The attempted attack highlights the continued operational capability of Al-Shabaab to target high-profile locations and figures, even during major political events.

It also signals the group’s intent to disrupt federal government efforts in the South West State. While no casualties were reported, the incident raises concerns about security preparedness and the broader stability of the region amid political transitions.
