Hassan Sheikh Visits Baidoa After Leadership Ouster in South West State

BAIDOA – (SD) – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Baidoa alongside a high-level delegation following recent political changes in the South West State administration.

He was received by the newly appointed interim leader, federal and regional officials, and residents. The visit comes after Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed Abdinasir Ahmed Bashir as interim head of the region, replacing Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, who was removed from office in a controversial move opposed by opposition groups.

According to officials, the President’s visit aims to accelerate the delivery of social services, support reconciliation efforts, strengthen governance, and address drought-related challenges affecting local communities.

During his stay, President Hassan Sheikh is expected to meet with regional leaders, traditional elders, security officials, and civil society representatives to discuss improving security, expanding government services, and advancing electoral reforms.

The visit is also intended to reinforce efforts toward implementing a one-person-one-vote electoral system, as part of broader goals to promote stability, democratic governance, and long-term development in Somalia.

The visit underscores the federal government’s effort to consolidate control in South West State following a disputed leadership change. While it signals a push for stability and reform, the controversial removal of the previous leader risks deepening political divisions. The success of this intervention will depend on whether reconciliation efforts can gain acceptance among local stakeholders and opposition groups.
