Key Somali political stakeholders agreed to form a unified political platform through a national congress in Somalia

NAIROBI (SD) – An important three-day meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, has concluded. The meeting was attended by members of the Somali Future Council, which includes the Somali Stabilization Platform, the Jubaland Regional State, and the Puntland Regional State.

This meeting followed earlier technical committee meetings held from November 5-8, 2025, which were tasked with developing the policy and plan for the Future Council, particularly focusing on organizing the Somali Future Council Congress to be held within Somalia.

Given the current complex security situation, political distrust, and the damage to national unity and solidarity, the Future Council decided to accelerate the convening of the Somali Future Council Congress to find a unifying platform that brings together the opposition and regional leaders.

The Future Council called for the preservation of sound democratic practices and for the elections of federal government institutions to be held on time in accordance with previous national agreements, while avoiding any unconstitutional term extensions.

The Somali Future Council clarified that no changes can be made to the Provisional Constitution or the 2012 political agreement that established the federal system without consensus from all parties.

The Council warned the leadership of the Federal Government that any steps leading to term extension or disruption of elections would endanger national unity and solidarity.

The Future Council called on the President of the Federal Government of Somalia to return to constitutional compliance and previous agreements, and to take the lead in implementing agreed-upon, transparent elections held on time.

Finally, the Somali Future Council called on the Somali people to strengthen their unity and solidarity and to participate in saving the country’s future and ensuring free elections that are held on schedule.
