MOGADISHU (SD) – The city of Mogadishu last night hosted an important meeting of political figures from the Opposition Forum, which focused extensively on the country’s current political situation and the expected electoral process.
The meeting was attended by opposition MPs from both houses of the Somali Federal Parliament, politicians, and members of civil society organizations.
Reports indicate that the opposition members held detailed discussions on the type of election feasible for the country, particularly if the incumbent President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, seeks re-election.
Some opposition leaders expressed deep concern, stating their belief that President Hassan Sheikh “cannot organize a timely and proper election within the limited remaining term.”
The core points of contention include:
- How to approach the upcoming electoral model.
- The government’s perceived failure to implement previous agreements.
- The opposition’s belief that the President lacks the capacity to organize and open a new electoral process in the country within his short remaining term.
Additionally, the Opposition Forum is planning to travel to the city of Kismayo on December 10th, where a significant political conference is scheduled to be opened. This conference will assess the future of the electoral process and the opposition’s stance in the current political phase.
This meeting and the planned visit to Kismayo are part of the opposition’s efforts to unify their political stance as the country enters a highly sensitive political period.
