MOGADISHU (SD) – Somalia’s Lower House has today passed a unilateral resolution allowing the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to rule the country for two more years.

Out of 275 member chamber, 149 lawmakers have voted in favour of the motion nodding to the president for an extended stay in office.

The endorsed resolution also gave Somalia’s National electoral Commission two years ultimatum to hold elections in the country.

Minutes after the vote by the members, Villa Somali lauded the resolution terming it ‘historic’.

“President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo called on the Somali people to work together to seize this historic opportunity and participate in the country’s political process,” Villa Somalia said in a statement.

Today’s resolution makes Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo second longest serving president in post civil war after late Mohamed Siyad Bare who ruled the Horn of Africa nation for 21 years.

The move comes hours after the immediate former Banaadir Regional Police commissioner Sadak Omar Hassan directed the lower house to end its business ‘until a new parliament is elected’.

Sadak John who fled the country after suspending the parliament session said he took the decision to suspend parliament sitting to avoid violence and power grab.

In a statement by the police boss, Sadak John was replaced with Farhan Mohamud Aden.
