NAIROBI (SD) – Kenya has suspended flights to and from Somalia for three months, but has cited no reason for the move which comes just a week after diplomatic ties were reestablished between the two countries.

In a notice to the airman on May 11, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said all flights between the two countries, except for UN aircraft on humanitarian missions and those delivering supplies medical COVID-19, remained suspended.

The NOTAM will be valid for three months from May 11, 2021 to August 9, 2021, the report says. There was no immediate reason for the suspension, but it comes just 24 hours after Somalia maintained that khat imports remain banned.

The notice came just three hours after President Mohamed Farmaajo left for Uganda to attend the inauguration of President Yoweri Museveni.

Kenyan media reported that the $ 50,000 khat remained stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Monday after the Somali Civil Aviation Authority announced it. According to traders quoted by local media,

Mogadishu announced last week that it had resumed relations with Nairobi following Qatar’s intervention. This followed nearly six months of freezing relations.
