JERUSALEM (SD) – The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, has begun a historic official visit to Israel, where he was received by Israeli President Isaac Herzog in what Somaliland officials describe as a major diplomatic milestone.
President Irro was welcomed with full ceremonial honours, including a red-carpet reception, military salute, and the playing of the Somaliland national anthem. According to Somaliland officials, the visit marked the first time that Somaliland’s flag and national anthem were formally displayed during an official ceremony of this scale at the Israeli Presidential Palace.
During their meeting, Presidents Irro and Herzog held talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding strategic cooperation, and advancing areas of mutual interest between Somaliland and Israel.
The two leaders discussed cooperation in areas including economic development, regional stability, investment, technology, and diplomatic engagement. Both sides emphasized the importance of building a partnership based on mutual respect, shared interests, peace, and sustainable development.
Following the talks, the two presidents issued a joint statement highlighting their commitment to deepening relations and promoting cooperation based on principles of democracy, stability, coexistence, and development.
President Herzog later hosted President Irro and the Somaliland delegation at an official state dinner at the Israeli Presidential Palace, underscoring the significance Israel attached to the visit.
The five-day visit is being presented by Somaliland as a major step in its efforts to expand international partnerships and strengthen its diplomatic presence on the global stage.
Somaliland officials say the visit reflects the administration’s broader strategy of increasing engagement with international partners while showcasing Somaliland’s record in governance, democratic elections, regional cooperation, and stability.
From Somaliland’s perspective, the visit represents one of the most significant diplomatic engagements in its history. The ceremonial reception and direct meetings with Israel’s leadership provide Somaliland with a high-profile international platform and reinforce its efforts to gain greater international visibility.
The symbolism of Somaliland’s flag and anthem being displayed at a state-level event is likely to be viewed by Somaliland supporters as evidence of growing international recognition and acceptance, even though formal recognition by the broader international community remains limited.
For Israel, the visit reflects a willingness to deepen engagement with Somaliland, a strategically located partner near the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Security cooperation, trade, technology, and regional stability are likely to be key areas of interest for both sides.
The visit may also generate reactions from the Federal Government of Somalia and from countries that oppose closer ties with Israel. As a result, while the visit strengthens Somaliland’s international profile, it could also add a new dimension to regional diplomatic debates.
Overall, the visit marks a significant moment in Somaliland’s foreign policy outreach and highlights its ongoing efforts to expand international partnerships and strengthen its role in regional and global affairs.
