HARGEISA – China has reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during a meeting between Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Ahmed Moallin Fiqi, and the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in Mogadishu.

According to Somalia’s Ministry of Defence, the meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in defence, security, military training, institutional capacity building, and technical assistance, as the Federal Government continues operations against Al-Shabaab.

Minister Fiqi thanked Beijing for what he described as China’s consistent support for Somalia, particularly its backing of Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also praised China’s role in supporting peace, reconstruction, and the development of government institutions.

Ambassador Wang Yu reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation, pledging continued assistance with military training, institutional development, and efforts to promote stability and reconstruction in Somalia.

The two sides agreed to deepen their strategic partnership and accelerate cooperation in defence and security.

China’s latest statement reflects its long-standing foreign policy of recognizing the Federal Government of Somalia as the sole sovereign authority over all Somali territories, including Somaliland. Beijing has consistently opposed recognition of Somaliland, aligning its position with its broader emphasis on territorial integrity and non-recognition of breakaway states.

From Somaliland’s perspective, China’s position is viewed as a continuation of a diplomatic policy rather than a reflection of realities on the ground. Somaliland has maintained its own government, armed forces, judiciary, and democratic institutions since reclaiming its independence in 1991, arguing that it meets the practical criteria of statehood despite lacking widespread international recognition.

The meeting also highlights the growing geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa. As Somaliland expands cooperation with countries such as Israel and seeks stronger security and economic partnerships with Western and regional allies, China continues to deepen its relationship with Mogadishu, reinforcing Somalia’s diplomatic position against Somaliland’s recognition efforts.

For Hargeisa, Beijing’s support for Somalia is unlikely to alter Somaliland’s long-term strategy, which remains focused on expanding international partnerships, demonstrating effective governance, and securing additional diplomatic recognition despite opposition from major powers such as China.
