GAROWE (SD) — Puntland Deputy Minister of Security Abdirahman Yusuf Dujana says the administration has evidence supporting its allegations concerning recent military strikes along Puntland’s coastline, amid controversy over possible Turkish involvement.

Dujana said Puntland opposes the killing of people merely suspected of piracy but supports lawful efforts to combat piracy and other maritime crimes.

He also linked the dispute to the broader political disagreement between Puntland and the Federal Government of Somalia, saying tensions between Garowe and Mogadishu have affected Puntland’s relationship with Turkey.

According to the deputy minister, Puntland has submitted written reports and supporting documents to the international community concerning what it described as serious incidents and mistakes along its coastline.

His comments come after Somalia’s State Minister for Defence, Omar Ali Abdi, said earlier this week that the Federal Government was aware of military operations taking place off the Puntland coast and was preparing a comprehensive report. He did not, however, identify which forces were responsible for the reported strikes.

Puntland’s latest statements raise pressure for greater transparency over military operations along its coastline. The administration’s claim that it has evidence could strengthen its position if the documents are independently verified. At the same time, the dispute risks further straining Puntland’s already difficult relations with Mogadishu and Ankara, particularly if civilian deaths or mistaken targeting are confirmed.
