HARGEISA (SD) — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) has met with several MPs and political figures who recently defected from the rogue Northeastern Administration and arrived in Hargeisa.

According to the President’s spokesperson, Irro welcomed the politicians and thanked them for returning home to Somaliland and for their willingness to contribute to peacebuilding, social cohesion, and development in their communities.

The meeting focused on security, stability and reconciliation. President Irro emphasized his government’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful engagement, while stressing that Somaliland’s citizens share common national interests.

The returned politicians, for their part, thanked the President for receiving them and said they were prepared to support peace efforts, development and social unity in their areas of origin.

Several ministers, members of Somaliland’s National Peace Commission, and other government officials attended the meeting.

The meeting carries clear political and strategic significance for Somaliland. By publicly receiving former Northeastern MPs, President Irro is signalling that Hargeisa intends to use political engagement and reconciliation to strengthen its influence in the eastern regions.

For the Northeastern Administration, the defections could represent a political setback if more officials or community figures follow. However, their return does mean that local communities have changed their political position.

Irro’s emphasis on peace and dialogue rather than confrontation also suggests an attempt to build broader local support while reducing tensions in the contested eastern regions.
