Al-Shabaab destroys Safaricom mast in Mandera

NAIROBI (SD) – Suspected al-Shabaab fighters have destroyed a Safaricom telecommunication mast in Village near Kenya-Somalia border, locals confirmed.

The men raided Darkale village near Banisa town in Mandera county just days after two attacks on two vehicles happened in the county.

A local resident in the area said the mast which was serving three other villages was destroyed last night.

“We are in distress and we don’t know who will save us. The militants are here creating havoc and fear. They bombed the Safaricom mast at night and that has weakened the communication network,” said Hassan Ahmed.

Last Monday, heavily armed men suspected to be al-Shabaab have opened fire on a private vehicle which transporting exam materials in Mandera county.

According to sources, the attackers kidnapped three of the vehicle’s occupants.

Kenya deployed forces along the border to hunt down the perpetrators.

The same day, a bus heading to Nairobi from Mandera was attacked but no casualties was reported.

Al-Shabaab has been carrying out attacks in Kenya since 2011 when Kenya sent its to troops to Somalia.

Kenya currently has 3500 soldiers in Somalia. The troops are working under the framework of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
