Somaliland Government Revokes Licenses of Telecommunication Companies, demands they reapply

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland’s Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Technology has today revoked the licenses of all telecommunications service providers in the country.

An statement issued by the Office of the Minister of Communications and Technology, Abdiwali Sufi Jibril, regarding the decision was addressed to Telesom, Somtel, Golis Somaliland, Nationlink, Africa Online and Somcable.

“The Ministry of Communications and Technology, through the implementation of the Telecommunication Services Regulation No. 02/2020, has revoked all telecommunications licenses held by various telecommunication service providers, effective today, 11/01/ 2021.” the statement read.

The Ministry reportedly made the announcement after the Government finalized a Code of Conduct for Companies that provide various Telecommunication Services.

Adding” It is therefore incumbent on service providers to apply for telecommunications licenses in accordance with the Telecommunication Services Licensing Regulations within 30 days from today, ”said the decree, signed by Minister of Communications and Technology Abdiweli Sufi Jibril.

This is the first time that a Somaliland government has taken on the country’s telecommunications companies, with the aim of harmonizing the scope of services provided by telecommunications companies, and their Tax liabilities.

The country’s telecommunication companies did not provide a response to the degree as of yet.
