Over 20 killed in al-Shabaab attack in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – More than twenty people have been killed and several others wounded after Jubbaland forces backed by Kenyan military under the framework of Amisom clashed with al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia.

Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters had on Wednesday stormed a military base belonging to Jubbaland forces in Kuday outside of Kismayo in Lower Jubba region.

The attack prompted fierce fighting which lasted for more than an hour.

Kenya defense forces at Kuday FOB have reportedly reinforced Jubbaland state forces by deploying a gunship helicopter and a ground fighting patrol unit.

In a statement, Kenyan military claimed killing more eleven al-Shabaab fighter and injuring over a dozen others during the operation.

Kenya military also said that they destroyed two-vehicles belonging to Shabaab Kuday-Tosha Road.

According to Jubbaland military officials, Al-Shabaab managed to kill seven Jubbaland soldiers and injured three others.

Meanwhile, al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack saying their fighters killed 20 Jubbaland soldiers.

Wednesday’s attack comes barely a day after Jubbaland warned locals against collaborating with al-Shabaab in the region.
