Afgoye (SD) – The Somali Journalists Association (SJS) strongly condemns the assassination of journalist Abdiweli Ali Hassan (Abdiweli Online) in Afgoye, Lower Shabelle region on Sunday 16 February 2020.
Unknown gunmen shot the reporter on the chest, causing him to be seriously injured while on his way to his home in the Hawa Tako neighborhood of Afgoye district, according to his family members and reporters worked with him.
Journalist Abdiweli, died of his injuries while on his way to the hospital, and his killers escaped.
“It is another sad day for the Somali journalist community. We call on the Federal Government and the administration of the Lower Shabelle region to undertake swift investigations, apprehend the murderers and bring them to justice,” said SJS Secretary General Abdalla Mumin in an statement.
The killing of Abdiwali Ali Hassan, is the first journalist murder in 2020 in Somalia. May Allah have mercy on the journalist, Abdiwali was 25, and left behind a wife and two children.
Somalia is the most dangerous country in the world for Journalist, facing killing and arrests from all political groups in the country.
