Hargeisa (SD) – Hargeisa City Council members have unanimously elected a new mayor and his deputy in their first meeting this morning.
The new members of the Hargeisa City Council have elected Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge of Waddani as the new mayor of Hargeisa, while Khadar Ahmed Omar of UCID has been elected deputy mayor.
Mooge was the most popular candidate for the mayoral post received close to 27, 000 votes in the recent local elections in Somaliland, won today unopposed.
“I pray to God to make us keep the oath we have sworn and to serve the people,” the new mayor told reporters after the election.
The mayor’s elections was attended by Somaliland’s Interior Minister Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, who praised the process.
Celebrations started on social media in Somaliland following the election of the new mayor of Hargeisa, Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge.
Somaliland held historic parliamentary and local elections on May 31st, with the ruling party Kulmiye as well as opposition parties Wadani and UCID contesting.
