MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali security forces backed by Amisom troops have today arrested several al-Shabaab militants following security operation in Middle Shabeelle region.
In a statement, Amisom said its Burundian contingent based at Gololey joined the operation, flushing out militants hiding in the Sayga forest.
“A number of al-Shabab fighters were captured and handed over to the Somali police for further investigations,” Amisom said.
The mission said the operation was aimed at ensuring free movement of Somali people on the main supply route of Mogadishu-Jowhar,
Al-Shabab, which is seeking to overthrow the government, has continued to restrict the movement of people and control supply routes to most of the restored areas, according to Somali authorities and humanitarian agencies.
Today’s development comes barely two days after a senior military official was killed in a roadside bomb that targeted a military vehicle near Gololey on the outskirts of Bal’ad town.
Al-Shabaab militant group claimed the responsibility for the attack saying they killed several soldiers in the blast.
