NAIROBI — (SD) Al-Shabaab fighters reportedly carried out a series of overnight attacks targeting Kenyan security positions across the northeastern counties of Wajir, Garissa and Mandera, in what appears to be a coordinated escalation along the Kenya-Somalia border.

Local reports said militants attacked a military camp in Qorof Xarar, Wajir County, where heavy gunfire was reportedly heard during an exchange between the attackers and Kenyan security forces.

In Garissa County, Al-Shabaab was reported to have targeted a military camp in Saredo, in the Dadaab area, as well as a nearby checkpoint. Fighters were also reported to have destroyed a newly established security camp in Biyo-Madobe, in the Fafi area. Reports indicated that no troops were stationed at the camp when it was attacked.

In Mandera County, militants were reported to have attacked Kenyan forces stationed in Hareeri Suuki, under the Ceel-qaaloow area.

Al-Shabaab has claimed that its fighters inflicted casualties on Kenyan troops during the attacks. However, there has been no independent confirmation of the group’s reported casualty figures.

Separately, Kenyan security officials confirmed that suspected Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on Arabia town in Mandera County on Sunday evening. Security forces said they engaged the attackers in a prolonged gunfight and forced them to retreat. Authorities said no casualties had been recorded from that incident at the time of reporting.

The latest incidents come amid continued security concerns along Kenya’s northeastern frontier. Mandera, Wajir and Garissa have remained particularly vulnerable because of their proximity to Somalia and the ability of Al-Shabaab-linked militants to move across remote and difficult-to-secure border areas.

Kenyan authorities have intensified patrols and security operations in the region, while the recent attacks underscore the continuing challenge of preventing militant groups from conducting cross-border raids against security installations.

The reported attacks suggest that Al-Shabaab continues to retain the ability to operate across several points of northeastern Kenya, despite sustained Kenyan counterterrorism operations. The simultaneous reports from Wajir, Garissa and Mandera are particularly significant because they place pressure on security forces across a wide section of the border.

However, the extent of the attacks and the number of casualties remain unclear. Al-Shabaab’s battlefield claims should therefore be treated cautiously until independently verified by Kenyan authorities or other credible sources.
