Bodyguards of Somalia’s Foreign Minister clash with Puntland forces

GALKAYO(SD) – Reports from Galkayo town in the central of Puntland state of Somalia say that the foreign minister of Somalia Abdi Said Muse Ali was attacked during iftar.

According to reports, the attack took place on a farm owned by one of the Chiefs in Mudug region named Yasin Abdi Samad, the person who hosted the iftar for the minister and his family.

The attack is said to have been carried out by Puntland forces, and although the exact motive behind the attack is unknown, it is said to be rooted in a dispute between the regional government and the feds.

One soldier accompanying the minister was killed in the shootout and three others were injured, including Mudug Regional Deputy Police Commander and Chief Yasin Abdisamad.

The clashes came hours after authorities in Puntland’s Mudug region issued an order banning political meetings without the knowledge of the government.

Chief Yassin was recently quoted in the press for suggesting that President Said Deni step down as President of Puntland, as he is running for federal office, while Deni is currently in Mogadishu campaigning.
