MOGADISHU (SD) – The Chinese government has criticized the growing relationship between Somaliland and Taiwan, stating that it has pressured Hargeisa to cease its ties with Taipei.
The Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in a brief interview with Dalsan TV, emphasized that Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory.
“There is only one China in the world; Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. Many countries support the reunification of the nation. This is a fundamental fact,” said Wang Yu.
He added that his government strongly condemns and warns Somaliland against strengthening its relationship with Taiwan.
“Taiwan is engaging with the political forces in Hargeisa, openly advocating for secession. We condemn and warn against the strengthening of such ties,” Wang Yu stated.
He further mentioned that China has taken steps to prevent Somaliland from pursuing these relations and is collaborating with the Somali government to safeguard its national interests, particularly territorial integrity. “China supports the Somali government in maintaining its territorial integrity,” he said.
The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), recently stated that his administration would enhance its relationship with Taiwan, a self-governing island that lacks international recognition.
