HARGEISA (SD)-Member of Somaliland Parliament Mohamed Abib has been released from prison after being detained for nearly a month based on an order from the presidency of Somaliland. The confirmation of the MP’s release was provided to the media by the commander of the prison where he was held.
The release of MP Maxamed Abiib follows a directive issued today by the Somaliland Constitutional Court, which deemed the detention of the MP unlawful. The court instructed the commander of the correctional services to release the MP immediately.
MP Mohamed Abib had been held in Madera prison for almost a month, having been arrested by Somaliland intelligence forces at the Hargeysa airport upon his return from the United Arab Emirates.
The arrest of MP Mohamed Abib was opposed by the Somaliland House of Representatives, which labeled it as unlawful. The parliament also rejected a request from the Somaliland Attorney General to lift the MP’s parliamentary immunity.
The Somaliland Supreme Court characterized Abiib’s detention as illegal and called on government agencies to adhere to the law.
The MP was arrested after the prosecution presented allegations of undermining the state, which were unanimously rejected by the parliament.
