EU,UK express concern over violence in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (SD) – UK and European Union ambassadors in Somalia have issued a statements on the clashes that erupted all around Mogadishu last night.

A statement from the office of the UK’s ambassador to Somalia expressed concern about the ongoing violence in Mogadishu.

“Reports of violence in Mogadishu are deeply concerning. We call for calm and restraint – peaceful dialogue is in the best interests of Somalia.” UK Ambassador said in tweet.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by EU Ambassador to Somalia Nicolas Berlanga also expressed similar concern.

“Highly concerned about the ongoing events in Mogadishu. The general interest requests maximum restraint, preserve institutions that belong to all and dialogue. Violence is unacceptable. Those responsible will be held accountable.” The EU ambassador tweeted.

In most districts of the capital, gunfire could be heard between pro-government and opposition forces.

The statement from the UK and EU embassies comes at a time when the situation in Mogadishu has deteriorated in the last 24 hours.
