Minneapolis to pay $27 millions in damages to George Floyd’s family

Minneapolis (SD) – The Minneapolis City Council today approved a $ 27 million compensation package for George Floyd’s family.

Floyd’s gruesome killing was filmed and streamed on social media by a young female witness who pleaded with other police officer’s to safe the victim’s life, they ignored her.

The decision comes as George Floyd’s family filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the City of Minneapolis and the four police officers charged in his death, alleging the officers and the city both violated Floyd’s rights, racism and impunity to flourish in its police department.

“This complaint shows what we have said all along, that Mr. Floyd died because the weight of the entire Minneapolis Police Department was on his neck. The City of Minneapolis has a history of policies, procedures and deliberate indifference that violates the rights of arrestees, particularly Black men, and highlights the need for officer training and discipline.” Crump said in a statement.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died on May 25 after officer Derek Chauvin, a white man, knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes while Floyd chanted “I can’t breathe”.

Floyd’s death sparked protests in Minneapolis and across the United States and led to a nationwide demand on racial justice.

The other three officers involved in the killings of George Floyd, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng have also been fired and are expected to stand trial in August on charges of aiding and abetting murder.
