Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi and the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia Mr. James Swan met at the Somaliland Presidential Palace to discuss how the United Nations can assist in Somaliland’s elections and cooperation between the United Nations and Somaliland.
During the meeting, a number of issues were discussed, including the relationship between the Republic of Somaliland and the United Nations, the plans and programs that will be the basis of the United Nations, according to statement from the president’s spokesperson.
The statement also said that Somaliland and the United Nations have agreed to continue talks and meetings to discuss cooperation between UN agencies and Somaliland, They also discussed elections and possible support from the United Nations.
For his part, James Swan spoke about his meeting with Somaliland President Muse Bihi.
“UN envoy James Swan and top officials from WFP Somalia, UNHCR and UN Women Somalia have been in Hargeisa to meet President Muse Bihi , local civil society groups and others, and discuss the world body’s support for the people of Somaliland in 2021 and beyond.” UNSOM said in a tweet.
The statement from Somaliland presidency said the UN Envoy also praised the government, opposition parties, the Electoral Commission and the people of Somaliland for their readiness and unity in holding the by-elections.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General was accompanied by the heads of UN agencies WFP, UN Women, UNHCR and other officials from the United Nations offices in Somaliland.
