Puntland says recent local elections caused COVID-19 upsurge

GAROWE (SD) – Cases of covid-19 which were recorded post council elections in Puntland state has increased with some places recorded deaths, the authorities in the northeastern regional state confirmed.

Speaking to the media, Puntland health minister, Dr Jama Mohamed said the state witnessed the upsurge in Covid-19 deaths following the recent district council elections in three districts namely Qardho, Eyl and Ufayn.

The minister also warned of a new increase in Covid-19 infections owing to the expected cold season.

Late last month, Puntland state authorities however did not disclose any figures regarding the infections.

Residents in Qardho, Eyl and Ufayn, had for the first time in decades cast their ballot in Puntland’s local elections.

There was a total of 54 polling stations open to serve just under 40,000 registered voters in the election saw 87 local councilors for the three districts being elected.
