NY May 03, 2023 (SD) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, announced today the appointment of Catriona Laing as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

She will succeed James Swan, who has been in the position since June 2018.

In a statement issued by his office, Guterres said that Laing brings over 35 years of experience in diplomacy, development and international relations, including extensive political experience in various parts of the UK government at both national and international levels.

Prior to her appointment, Laing was the UK High Commissioner to Nigeria from November 2018 to April 2023.
