MOGADISHU (SD) -The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, today delivered an important speech at an emergency meeting of the Arab League.
The meeting, requested by the Somali government, addressed the violations posed by the Ethiopian government regarding its sovereignty, and the unity of Somalia.
Hamza Abdi Barre discussed the critical situation and expressed concerns about the controversial MoU reached in Addis Ababa between Ethiopia and the self-declared Republic of Somaliland.
A previous statement from the Arab League had stated, “We will not accept any agreement that undermines the sovereignty of Somalia.”
Tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia have escalated following Ethiopia’s engagement with Somaliland to establish a naval base, which Somalia claims is a violation of its sovereignty.
Leaders in Somaliland argue that this agreement will provide Ethiopian recognition, claiming it will be the first country to officially recognize Somaliland’s self-declared independence.
The Federal Government of Somalia accuses Ethiopia of violating Somalia’s sovereignty and unity with the controversial agreement.
The United States, the UK, and the European Union have expressed their support for Somalia’s sovereignty, and unity.
