Somali Police To Monitor Social Media Activity

MOGADISHU (SD) – General Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar, the commander of the Somali Police Force, said that the country is witnessing an increase in the number of sexually explicit messages being transmitted through social media.

The Commander said that new and unprecedented crimes committed on social media are detrimental to society’s morals, affecting the culture.

He added that they formed and trained a special task force to monitor crime and misconduct on social media.

The announcement by the Somali Police Force Commander comes at a time when youth on social media have recently posted several unethical items, which have had a profound effect on the country.

Activist cautioned that the commander’s comments could mean more restrictions on freedom of expression.
