Somali President Celebrates Northern Independence but Fails to address Las Anod Shelling

Mogadishu June 26, 2023 (SD) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a speech on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the Somali National Day, which commemorates the historical moment when Somali regions were united, particularly between the southern and the northern regions of the country. He highlighted the significance of this day in terms of the values of unity and Somali nationalism.

The President stated that we should reflect on the challenges faced by the Somali people and the setbacks in achieving unity, but today’s generation must strive to revive the spirit of Somalia, full of hope, harmony, and a sense of responsibility towards their people.

“People of Somalia, let us think about the decades that have passed since independence. What has happened to the beautiful Somalia we once had?!. We need a prosperous and peaceful Somalia, and it requires collective efforts from all of us. Those who cause division and disunity among us are our enemies.”

President Hassan Sheikh expressed his gratitude and highlighted the achievements made in the Northern Regions, emphasizing that they have contributed significantly to the peace and state-building efforts in Somalia. He also emphasized the importance of unity and called for an end to divisions that hinder Somalia’s progress.

However, the Federal President of Somalia failed to acknowledge the devastation in Las Anod, a city known for Somalia unity, currently under siege by Muse Bihi secessionist forces.

Additionally, the ceremony featured speeches on the significance of unity and the importance of the Somali people delivered by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama, the Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, the Governor of Banadir Region, Mr. Yusuf Hussein Jimcale, as well as religious leaders and Somali elders.
