Somalia: Four types of elections tabled at the Dhusamareb 3 conference

Dhusamareb (SD) – Four different types of elections were presented at the Conference in Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug State of Somalia.

These types of elections were presented to the conference by the Technical Committee of the Dhusamareb 3 Conference which tasked to figure out the type of elections that could take place in the country.

The committee forwarded the proposals to the presidents of Hirshabelle, southwest, Galmudug and the governor of Benadir, with presidents Ahmed Madobe and Said Deni boycotting the meeting.

The types of elections presented by the committee are as follows:

1) Indirect elections with increase voters to 101, -1000, with delegates selected by elders, and civil society, for a joint parliamentary election before February 2021.

2) Combination of direct and indirect elections will be held in some constituencies, and others will be held, with more than one million people eligible to vote by July 2021.

3) Bio-metric, with more than 3 million people voting, takes 13 months – Electoral Commission Recommendation.

4) One Person one vote, Registration and voting on the same day will take 3 to 4 million in 9-12 months.

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is reported to prefer the second option of direct and indirect elections in some areas, with one million voter to be held by July 2021.

The Puntland and Jubaland state presidents did not attend the conference, demanding that the international community be present at the conference and a new PM be appointed prior to any agreement on elections.
