EU budgetary support to the Somali government has been suspended over alleged intimidation against media as well as attempt to rig the upcoming election.
According to sources privy to the matter, the bloc expressed grave concern over alleged human violations conducted by the current government.
The funding was suspended after EU’s External Action Service backed the decision.
Government has not yet comment on the budgetary support by EU.
The development comes days after Somali capital hosted deadly protests by irate demonstrators against the government led by president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
Last week, several of people were injured following a clash between protestors and security forces Mogadishu.
Government accused the opposition leaders of being the mastermind of the demonstrations which culminated in a clash between Somali forces and armed who filtrated the protest.
But the leaders of the opposition dispelled accusations by the government.
