Somalia sets 2020/21 election schedule

Mogadishu (SD) – Meeting between the heads of the federal government and the regional leaders at Villa Somalia decided on the timetable for the upcoming elections in the country.

The timetable stipulates that the election process will officially begin on October 10th, with two federal and state election commissions to be appointed by October 20th.

October 20-31 is set to establish and train electoral commissions.

From November 1 to 30, the selection of delegates to elect members of parliament and polling stations will be finalized.

The first election will take place on December 1, 2020, and will last until 10, when the Upper House of the Somali Parliament will be elected.

This will be followed by parliamentary elections, which will take place between 10 and 27 December 2020.

The election of both speakers will take place on January 1, while the presidential election will take place on February 8, 2021.

If the schedule goes as planed, President Farmajo will be the first president of the federal government not to extend his term, despite his initial attempts to prolong his term.
