Somalia sets conditions for lifting Kenyan Khat ban

Mogadishu (SD) – The Somali federal government has imposed five conditions before lifting the ban on Kenya’s Khat imports, according to Kenyan media.
Kenya’s Miraa Chamber of Commerce (Nyamita) believes that talks with Somalia could help lift the embargo on Miraa and that Somalis have made demands and that Kenya should address them.

The requirements include; Kenya to refrain from interfering in Somalia’s internal affairs, apologize for violating Somalia’s airspace, allow goods from Somalia into their country and have Kenya suspend stop over flights from Somalia in Wajir.

“Top Somali government officials say Kenya has refrained from resolving the matter, the president of Kenya must resolve the diplomatic raw with Somalia, ”said Munjuri, chairman of the Kenya Khat Association.

The Kenyan government, for its part, has not yet commented on the terms of the ban, as the Kenyan Mira exporters face a massive financial strain.
