Somalia shuts down over 12,000 media accounts

MOGADISHU (SD) – The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has closed more than 12,000 accounts that the Khawarij (Al-Shabab) used to spread fake news and mislead people.

“NISA, in collaboration with Federal Government agencies responsible for the Internet and Media, successfully closed 12,010 accounts, including social media platforms and news websites used by the Khawarij to propagate terrorist ideologies,” said a statement from NISA.

The statement revealed the number of social media accounts shut down belonging to Al-Shabaab. Previously, the Ministry of Information had reported the closure of social media platforms used by Al-Shabaab to disseminate their views.

“Most of the closed accounts had no references or followers, and the Khawarij had secretly created them using fake images and names,” the NISA statement added.

Additionally, NISA released a chart detailing the closed accounts from July to December 2024.

Facebook had the highest number of closed accounts, followed by TikTok, then Telegram, and the least were websites, with only five shut down, according to the chart released by NISA.
