Somalia: Union of Candidates urgently calls on the UN Security Council for intervention

Mogadishu (SD) – The Union of Candidates sent a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council, Dame Barbara Woodward, demanding an intervention in order to facilitate quick implementation of electoral process in Somalia, and ensure that parliamentary and presidential elections are held as soon as possible.

Candidates have accused the outgoing president and his allies of refusing to work for free and fair elections, adding that if the Security Council does not intervene, Farmajo will continue to obstruct efforts to democratize the electoral process.

“Somalia’s political confidence has been shattered because we are witnessing Farmajo’s systematic efforts to undermine democracy, and the use of military forces to remain in office illegally, “the statement read.
