Somalia’s Council of Ministers pass new electoral Laws

MOGADISHU (SD) -The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia held its weekly meeting today, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. During the meeting, they discussed several key issues. They approved two significant laws, the Electoral Law of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Law on Political Parties and Organizations, which will govern the electoral process in the country.

These two laws, approved by the Council of Ministers, are expected to guide the country’s election process and enable the Somali people to elect their national leaders in the upcoming elections.

Government spokesperson Farhan Jimcaale added that the newly approved laws would transition the country from the previous indirect election system, which has long been used in Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud aims to implement a one-person, one-vote electoral system, with less than two years remaining in his administration. However, his plan faces opposition from many political figures who view it as a potential move toward extending his term in office.
