Somaliland and Israel Strengthen Diplomatic Ties as Ambassador Presents Credentials to President Irro

HARGEISA (SD)— Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) has received Israeli Ambassador Michael Lotem at the Presidential Palace, where the ambassador formally presented his diplomatic credentials, marking a significant step in the development of relations between Somaliland and Israel.

The ceremony marks a new phase in bilateral relations following the agreement between the two sides to establish formal diplomatic ties. For Somaliland, the relationship is part of a broader diplomatic strategy aimed at strengthening its international position, expanding direct partnerships with other countries and advancing its long-standing campaign for international recognition.

President Irro welcomed Ambassador Lotem and said Somaliland was interested in building relations with Israel based on mutual interests and practical cooperation. He highlighted potential areas of partnership, including security, trade, investment, technology and infrastructure.

The president also emphasized Somaliland’s strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and near the Red Sea, saying cooperation between the two sides could contribute to regional security and stability. Somaliland hopes to use its geographical importance to develop stronger international partnerships while attracting investment, technology and expertise that can support its economy and national development.

Ambassador Lotem described his appointment as an honour and pledged to work towards strengthening bilateral relations. He said cooperation could cover security and defence, trade, investment, healthcare, education and technology.

From Somaliland’s perspective, the diplomatic relationship with Israel serves objectives that go beyond economic and security cooperation. Hargeisa hopes that building direct relations with Israel will increase Somaliland’s international visibility, strengthen its diplomatic network and demonstrate its ability to conduct independent foreign relations.

The government also sees the partnership as an opportunity to attract investment, gain access to advanced technology and develop cooperation in areas that could benefit Somaliland’s economy and security. Its strategic position along the Gulf of Aden and near the Red Sea is another important part of its diplomatic argument that Somaliland can contribute to regional stability and maritime security.

However, the relationship is likely to face political and diplomatic sensitivities because of Israel’s position in the wider Middle East and the regional implications of its growing engagement in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland will therefore need to balance its national interests with regional relationships and international concerns.

Ultimately, Hargeisa’s broader objective is to turn diplomatic engagement into practical benefits while using these partnerships to strengthen its case for international recognition.
