El-Afweyn (SD) – Somaliland forces in Dararweyne, Sanaag region, for a peacekeeping mission abandoned their mission and bases, settling in the outskirts of El-Afweyn, according to eyewitnesses.
The revolting Somaliland forces were seen occupying two checkpoints in the town of El-Afweyn, added the eyewitnesses.
The Somaliland military command in the Sanaag region reportedly tried to persuade the troops to return to their bases, but the forces refused.
The reason for the army’s revolt is said to be about securing fundamental rights, according to sources with direct knowledge of the situation.
In recent days, there have been increasing reports of Somaliland military protesting, particularly those in the eastern regions of Somaliland.
Somaliland MPs have also been speaking to the media in recent days, about the plight of the country’s forces.
The Somaliland government has so far not commented on the exact reason for the military strike and what it plans to do about it.
